Tips for Buying Coconut

Buying coconuts doesn’t have to be a hit or miss endeavor. Knowing what to look for before you go shopping will ensure you are happy with what you take home. It doesn’t matter if you are buying fresh coconut or packaged, you need to adhere to these guidelines.

Where to Shop

If you have a local market, that is the best place to shop for coconuts. They will have a wide selection due to the harvest of their crops. You can check for organically grown coconut markets too.

If you don’t have such markets available, check out your local grocery store. They should have some coconuts on hand. Sadly, the selection varies from one grocery store to the next. You may need to check out several stores before you find one that has a great selection for you to check out.

If you aren’t finding what you want, tell the manager of the various stores. If enough customers voice such concerns they will make changes. Your exchange of information could be what it takes for them to start ordering and offering coconuts for their customers.


Keep in mind the size and shape of a coconut can vary. It depends on where they are grown and the variety they happen to be. Even so, you can compare one coconut against others. Look for those that are heavier as that is an indicator of a good coconut.

Check for Liquid

Take the fresh coconut and hold it up to your ear. Shake it gently so you can hear anything inside of it. If you hear liquid, that is a good indicator you want to buy the coconut. If you can’t hear anything, the coconut is too ripe. It is going to have a taste that is somewhat soapy rather than sweet.

Carefully Examine

Even though coconut shells are very tough, you need to examine them before you buy. If you see cracks in the shell don’t buy it. If there are any punctures you also don’t want it. Next, check that there are two or three puncture holes offered. They are called eyes or indentations and they are dark circles. Touch them to make sure they aren’t too soft. There shouldn’t be any liquid leaking from this area of the coconut either.


If you don’t plan to use the coconut right away, you can store it in the refrigerator for a couple of months. Make sure you cover it in newspaper or wax paper. Don’t allow it to touch anything else in the refrigerator. If you would like to open it immediately, you can store the meat from a coconut for a couple of days. You can also freeze it for up to one year.

Coconut Oils

 When you are shopping for coconuts in an oil form, take the time to read the labels. Only buy products that are free of chemicals and solvents. Only buy 100% coconut oil products or they won’t provide you with the value you are looking for.

Coconut oils can be pricey when you buy them in small amounts. It is a better deal to buy them in bulk. Look for unrefined coconut oil or cold pressed products but make sure they are raw. Look up any information on the packaging you aren’t sure of rather than just assuming it must be good for you if it is coconut oil.

Baking Coconut

Always look at the ingredients listed when shopping for baking products that contain coconut. Avoid products that have sulphates in them. Make sure the package isn’t opened or torn. If they are, the coconut could be dried out and no good without that moisture. Check the expiration date. If you don’t use all the product, click the bag closed. Store in a cool, dry location.

Coconut Water

If you get tired of plain water, you may be tempted to consume sugary drinks and soda. Coconut water can be a refreshing alternative. It tastes great and it is good for you. It can provide you with a boost of energy too.

Read the ingredients before you buy! The only ingredients you want are coconuts + water! If the product has anything else you should bypass it. The added ingredients will significantly reduce the nutritional value that coconut water offers. Avoid products like this with artificial flavors and sweeteners.

When it is offered, buy organic coconut water. This means no herbicides, pesticides, or other chemicals were used in the creation of the product. The idea is to avoid such toxins when you can with the foods and drinks you consume. Organic coconut water may cost a bit more but it is worth it for your peace of mind.

Buy raw Coconut Water when you can. Ideally, if you find raw organic coconut oil you have hit the jackpot! Raw coconut water means they use a cold press method of pressuring rather than pasteurizing it. The pasteurizing process removes natural nutrients and enzymes.

Always check the expiration date before you buy coconut water. Not all stores will rotate the inventory like they should. Most of the time, such products have a very long shelf life of at least one year.

Coconut Milk

A delicious and nutritious alternative to regular milk is coconut milk. You can drink it alone, use it for cooking and baking, and even use it for your coffee or cereal. Look for products that are organic as they are free of chemicals and toxins.

Read the labels and don’t buy any types of coconut milk that contain sulfur dioxide. Many of the products contain soy lecithin and guar gum. Those aren’t harmful ingredients so such products would be fine to purchase.

Avoid buying coconut milk that is in cans. This is due to the BPAs found in the lining of such cans. Instead buy those in glass jars, cardboard containers, and plastic jugs. Always check the expiration date on coconut milk before you purchase it. You may have to try several brands until you find one that is thick enough for you as some are quite watery.
