How to Open a Coconut

There is no denying coconuts are delicious, but some people are intimidated by how to get them open. There is no right or wrong method, so have some fun exploring the options. Then you can pick the method that works the best for you. Don’t let getting one open be what stands in your way! Let’s see how to open a coconut.

How to Open a Coconut #1: Use a Hammer and a Nail

The use of a hammer to open a coconut may sound silly at first. However, it is one of the easy methods that can get you to the delicious enjoyment you seek in very little time. Grab a towel and a nail to get the job done right!

Take a close look at the coconut all the way around. You will see some darker indentation areas on one part of it. Most coconuts have 2 or 3 or them. These are the weakest areas of the coconut. Use them to your advantage so you can penetrate this large nut! You can use these indentations to remove the juice from the coconut.

Place the nail on one of the indentations and give it several good taps with the hammer. Repeat this process for the other indentations. Place the coconut upside down over a jar or bucket so the juice can drain out. Use something that allows the coconut to sit on it and not fall over. If the juice isn’t flowing well, put a hole on the other side to offer it a vent.

Give the coconut plenty of time to completely drain. Once that is accomplished, put it on the towel. Place it in the center so the towel can be completely wrapped around it. Wrap it up tight so there are no openings that any part of the coconut can slip through. Grab your hammer and give the wrapped up coconut a few good hits.

Sometimes, the coconut will split right in half and you can then split it again. Other times you will have several pieces all different sizes. Once you have the coconut open, use a sharp knife to remove it from the shell. It is recommended to rinse the coconut meat before you consume it.

How to Open a Coconut #2: Oven and Ice Pick Method

Not everyone is fond of using a hammer or can do so. If you have children in the house, you don’t want to scare them with the sound. You can open a coconut with the use of your oven and an ice pick. Preheat your oven to 400 F.

While it is heating, pierce your indentations on the coconut with an ice pick. Drain the liquid over the sink or over a bowl. Place the coconut in the oven for about 10 minutes. Turn it over and heat for another 10 minutes. Allow it to cool some but you want to manipulate the coconut while it is still warm.

Gently tap on the coconut around the seam and use a sharp knife to pry open the shell. You can use a knife or a spoon to remove the insides. It will be easier to remove while the coconut is still warm.

How to Open a Coconut #3: Counter Method

If you don’t have access to an oven and you don’t have a hammer, you don’t have to go without. You can use the counter method but it will be a bit harder so don’t get frustrated. Identify the seam of the coconut and hit it hard around that area on a sharp counter or the concrete. If you have access to something you can pierce it with to drain the liquid that can help.

Be careful if you hit it too hard on a counter or the concrete though. It could result in the coconut breaking open and going in all directions. Ideally, you want to use enough force to get it to start splitting open but not completely coming open. Then you can use your hands to finish prying it apart.

How to Open a Coconut #4: Corkscrew Method

A corkscrew can come in very handy when it comes to opening up a coconut. Once again, start by finding the 2 or 3 indentations. Place the corkscrew in the center of them and move it around until you find the softest place where you can insert it. Press it down and twist firmly. Then pull down the levers of the corkscrew.

Repeat the process so there are several indentations which span further than the radius of the corkscrew. Turn it over and drain the juice from the coconut. With a clever, cut along the seam of the coconut. Use the back side of the clever to hit it a few times before you cut into it.

Pay attention for any signs that the coconut is cracking. That is the weaker part of the coconut and where you want to focus your attention. Continue to whack this area with the back of the clever and then try to pull it apart. Break it apart into pieces. You can enjoy the meat from the inside with ease.

Practice

Don’t let a coconut be something that tests your patience. Instead, be in control and give it time. As you practice, you will find what works best and what doesn’t. Use tools that are sharp too because a dull knife or clever is just going to be an additional challenge for you.

Keep in mind that not all coconuts are the same. Some of them are far easier to open than others. Don’t get discouraged if the first one you try is difficult, it will get faster with time. Don’t be in a rush to drain the liquid either. When it is fully removed from the inside of the coconut, then it is hollow inside.

This makes it far easier to open the shell. Always be careful with the process of opening a coconut so you don’t cut or injure yourself. You will find the delicious taste of the meat from the inside is well worth figuring out the best method of opening the shell on a coconut!.
